Mad Skills Monday 050: Mat Roff

Welcome to Mad Skills Monday, where we showcase top work from young creatives to bring some inspiration to beat the post-weekend blues.

Mat Roff has already been published in the fifth issue of our magazine, and also in an article we had published in the latest issue of Creative Review (full write-up about that coming this week!), so why the bumplops have we never featured him on Mad Skills Monday before?! This week we’re celebrating our 50th Mad Skills Monday post, so it’s about time we corrected this.

Power tool: Fineliners & Photoshop
Power song: Any song by The 1975 at the moment! Or 80s music. Always gets me buzzing!
Power snack: Chocolate milkshake.

We love Mat’s work because of the level of time and devotion he puts into developing his style; anyone who follows him on Twitter and Instagram will find themselves updated almost daily with new sketches, experiments and techniques as he fires through commissions, competition entries and personal projects at an impressive rate – while never letting up on that meticulous level of craft and detail that comes across in all his work. He also has a penchant for the grotesque, which always goes down well in our books.

Mmmm… guts. Currently based in Oxford, Mat studied Graphics & Illustration at De Montfort University, and has been freelancing full time ever since.

The next two images are amongst my favourites of Mat’s work, for the sheer detail in the scene, and the way he’s somehow managed to get so much atmosphere and emotion without even showing the subjects’ faces.

Check out some more of Mat’s work on his website, and follow him for those delicious process shots on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Vimeo. Word on the streets (and the About page on his website) is that he’s available for commission – go hit him up!

Want us to show off your mad skills? We’re always looking for young creatives, students and graduates to showcase for our Monday feature, so send us an email with some samples or a portfolio link with the subject line “Mad Skills Monday” to team@shellsuitzombie.co.uk and we’ll check you out!
